We love stories! And we love love love hearing your stories and would love to feature everyone, but with the increasing interest in 2nd Story we've had to lay down some ground rules. Here goes:
What is a 2nd Story story? What makes it different from any other story?
2nd Story classes at Uptown Writer's Space!
2nd Story series tells stories the same way you would to your best friend over a glass of wine (or two or five), except in this case that friend is an audience of a hundred-plus. This workshop outlines the elements of a 2nd Story story, the different writing and performance techniques used, and how we get them on (and then off!) the page.
Open to everyone regardless of writing and/or performance experience, this workshop is for people looking to enhance their storytelling skills, be it for the stage or just out and about (and tipsy) with your friends.
Strongly suggested for people looking to submit to 2nd Story.
Taught by 2nd Story's Amanda Delheimer and Megan Stielstra.
Thursday, May 22nd 6:00-9:00
Uptown Writer's Space, $40 ($30 for students)
Spaces are limited. Register online at the Uptown Writer's Space.
2nd Story is a specific form of storytelling that seeks to mirror the way you tell stories to your best friend over a good glass of wine/cup of coffee/piece of chocolate cake. There are all sorts of things we're looking for, and the best way to find out what those things are is to come to 2nd Story. Once you're there, ask at the door to talk with a member of the story development team and we'll talk you through what we look for in a submission.
NOTE: We do NOT take submissions from people who haven't seen the event. End of story. (ha ha good pun!)
Submission guidelines including deadlines, auditions and formatting are below. Please note there are two ways to submit to 2nd Story: either a four-month commitment to our Story Cycle or a one-time performance in our annual Festival.
The Story Cycle
WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR THE FALL 2008 STORY CYCLE.
The 2nd Story Monthly series—both at Webster's and On the Road—features stories developed in our monthly writing process. This process runs in two cycles:
- Fall Cycle: August-November
- Spring Cycle: January-April
For each cycle, we work with a select number of storytellers who participate in monthly writing workshops and performance direction.
NOTE: Participating in the monthly process is a minimum four-month commitment of four or five meetings a month. Your attendance is mandatory. If this is too much for you, we suggest you submit to the Festival instead (see below).
We read submissions for these storyteller slots in JUNE for the fall cycle and DECEMBER for the spring cycle and will bring in folks as needed to make 2nd Story as interesting and varied as possible for our audience. Here's what you do to get involved:
- Write a 2nd Story story (see above).
- Email us at monthlysubmission@serendipitytheatre.org by JUNE 1st or DECEMBER 1st (depending on what cycle you’d like to apply for) as follows:
- The subject heading of your email should read: “2nd Story Monthly Submission—Your Name”
- In the body of the email, please include your name and contact information, and please specify to which cycle you’re submitting (i.e. Fall 2008, Jan-April 2009, etc).
- Please attach your 2nd Story story as a WORD DOCUMENT, formatted in the following way:
- Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double-spaced
- Your name, the story’s title, and a page number must be on every page.
- Please also include a copy of your writing/performance resume as an attachment.
- Be patient, if you've got what we're looking for, we'll ask you in for an audition. Either way, we'll get back to you in late June or late December.
NOTE: Submissions not formatted in this way WILL NOT be read. No joke.
The Festival
SUBMISSIONS FOR THE SPRING 2008 FESTIVAL ARE NOW CLOSED.
The 2nd Story Festival is held every year, usually in late April or early May and features fifty+ storytellers, all presenting new work. We hold auditions for the Festival annually the FIRST WEEK OF FEBRUARY. Submitting directly to the festival is different than submitting to the monthly cycle, insofar as that the process is shorter and more intense. We still provide some writing/editing support and will pair you with a director and a sound designer for performance direction, but because the process takes place over a shorter period of time, we expect folks to come in with more highly polished stories and a real understanding of what their approach to the 2nd Story aesthetic might be. To submit directly to the festival, here's what you do:
- Write a 2nd Story story (see above).
- Email us at festivalsubmission@serendipitytheatre.org by JANUARY 1st of the appropriate year to apply for an audition slot for the FIRST FULL WEEK OF FEBRUARY. (i.e. for the 2008 Festival, we will be holding auditions from 2/3/08-2/9/08, for the 2009 Festival, we will be holding auditions from 2/1/2009-2/7/2009, etc). Your email should be formatted as follows:
- The subject heading of your email should read: “2nd Story Festival YEAR Submission—Your Name” (as in “2nd Story Festival 2007 Submission—Joe Schmoe”)
- In the body of that email, please include:
- your name,
- your contact information, and
- ALL available times you could come in during the first week of February to read us your story.
- To that email, please attach:
- The 2nd Story story that you’ve written, formatted in the following way:
- Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double-spaced.
- Your name, the story’s title, and a page number on every page.
- Any performance/writing resume you may have.
- Show up EARLY to your assigned audition time and read us your 2nd Story story (see above). PLEASE NOTE that stories MUST be memorized for the festival. You do not need to have your story memorized for the audition, but you should have practiced reading it out loud enough that you can make eye contact with us and engage us in your story.
- Be patient. We’ll get back to you within a couple weeks and let you know if what you’ve got will fit into the Festival.
We'll send you an email back to let you know whether you’ve been scheduled for an audition, when that audition time is, and any additional information you might need.
If you have any questions concerning 2nd Story submissions for either the festival or the monthly cycle, please contact Megan Stielstra, Director of Story Development OR, BETTER YET, ask to speak with her or a member of the story development team at any 2nd Story event.
Thank you for your interest, go forth and tell many stories!
